The original Autodesk AutoCAD was based on code developed by Peter Tavel and released in 1984. The original AutoCAD program was designed for the Apple II and later ported to the Atari ST. They developed AutoCAD II, which was never released for the Apple II. It was ported to the Atari ST, Amiga, PC, and most other platforms. Some modules were developed in-house by Autodesk for these platforms. The only system they did not release in-house was the Macintosh, and it was not until AutoCAD 2000 that they released a native OS X version.

X, the predecessor to AutoCAD 2000 and later versions, is a point-and-click program which ran on most platforms, including the Atari ST, Amiga, PC, and Apple Macintosh. Autodesk discontinued development on X in 1992.

AutoCAD 1996 was renamed from AutoCAD XL, which was a high-end, feature-filled version of AutoCAD, intended for industry, compared to the AutoCAD 2000, which was designed for home users.

AutoCAD LT (AutoCAD ’97: Interior, exterior and mechanical) is a 2D drafting program which resembles the earlier AutoCAD XL, but is easier to use.

AutoCAD 2000, released in October 1999, was the first version of AutoCAD to run natively on the Windows operating system. The free version was released in April 2000 and the Professional version in October. AutoCAD 2000 changed the toolbars from being moved from the top of the window to the right side, where the status bar and context help was moved to. Autodesk Architecture Essentials was developed for the new Autodesk Architecture application for this release.
