The global pandemic has been devastating: It has infected more than a million people in the US and killed more than 100,000. And as the disease spread in Europe, the US, and South America, it has engulfed all of us. Even as the public response to the crisis began to take shape, the media seized on an opportunity to present the pandemic as an athletic competition, promoting the self-fulfillment narratives that have long been at the heart of US sports coverage. Instead of reporting the public health crisis, journalists, commentators, and sports analysts turned the coronavirus into a game that they could win.
And there is the problem. Journalists and analysts are trying to turn the coronavirus into a game, and, by extension, into a consumer product. In doing so, they are distorting the public’s perception of the risks and harms of the disease. The daily coverage of the pandemic has been relentless. But the fact that it has been so relentless has obscured the media’s failure to demonstrate that they can responsibly report the public health risks of COVID-19 and its potential for harm.
As has been made clear to us in this issue of the Tufts Journal of Sports and Health Law, this failure is the result of a toxic mix of commercial imperatives, the demands of the news industry to draw eyeballs, the biases of respected individuals, and the increasing number of faux experts who are willing to
