Adobe Photoshop Elements

Photoshop Elements is a step up from Photoshop and is designed for non-professionals, including beginning and advanced users. It features many of the same tools as in Photoshop, but is aimed at simple tasks such as cropping images and resizing them. The program gives non-professionals a basic understanding of the image-editing system. (See the image above.)

Before you start editing images, here’s some important information you need to know.

How to Use Photoshop

The Photoshop buttons are on the main toolbar. Select any tool you want and click the icon that appears next to it, as shown in the figure below. To undo your last action, click Edit ▸ Undo or press Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+X or the arrowhead icon. To redo your last action, press Ctrl+Y, Ctrl+X or the arrowhead icon.

Some tools also have keyboard shortcuts. For example, to reduce the image’s resolution, press Ctrl+E, Ctrl+C or Ctrl+1. To increase the image’s resolution, press Ctrl+E, Ctrl+I or Ctrl+2. To crop an image, click Crop ▸ Crop or press Ctrl+E, Ctrl+C or Ctrl+C on the keyboard. If you don’t click Crop, the image will be cropped. To save your image, click Save ▸ Save or press Ctrl+S on the keyboard.

Some Photoshop tutorials show the image after a particular editing action but before saving the image. This is useful if you want to see the result of a particular action. However, it’s easy to save your image after the action by clicking Save or pressing Ctrl+S on the keyboard. You can now edit the image again.

Undo and Redo

With the exception of images without layers, you can select only one object or group of objects at a time for editing. Layers are saved in this way, so you can select multiple layers and do changes, then save them as separate layers.

This is an essential feature. If you select something that you don’t want in an image, press Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+X to undo your last action and go back to the last state. Select the area you want, click Edit ▸ Undo or press Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+X, and then click the image.

Photoshop Elements comes in three editions: A basic version, a Home Edition with Corel PaintShop Pro, and a full version that includes the full version of the professional version of Photoshop.

* The Healing Brush is useful for removing unwanted portions of an image. The eraser tool can also be used in this capacity.

Although the Pen tool is not usually considered a brush tool, you can assign a brush as a brush tool and use it as a pen tool. For example, if you create a brush and then assign it as a brush tool (choose Edit → Edit Brush…), you can then select the Brush menu option in the toolbox and pick Pencil.

The Freeform drawing tool lets you draw with more freedom than the Pen tool. You can choose the type of pen and paint on a path. You can also apply an effect to the stroke.

Basic Pen Tool Tips

You can configure the Pen tool to do many things. You can change the drawing mode, change the color and size, change the line type, and change the brush. The following sections give you some tips on using this tool.

Making a Line

You can use the Pen tool to draw any shape. You can also use the Pen tool to make paths or shapes.

To draw a straight line, make sure that the Pressure sensitivity setting is not on. When Pressure sensitivity is on, the line is a curved line or sometimes an irregular line. When Pressure sensitivity is off, the line is a straight line.

Figure 1-3 shows an example of using the Pen tool.

Drawing a Circle

To draw a circle, select the Pen tool from the toolbox. (If you don’t see the Pen tool in the toolbox, go to the top of the Toolbox and click it again.) Then start drawing a circle, and press Shift+D to draw a perfect circle. You can also use the Line tool for this purpose.

Drawing a Rectangle

To draw a rectangle, select the Pen tool from the toolbox. Then start drawing the rectangle with the vertical guides.

Those who have strong convictions about the merits of their own position are almost without exception able to act on these convictions. Those who are charged with having subverted democracy, on the other hand, are almost always in a state of political shutdown, not because it is better to have none of the truth revealed but because it is still better to have a voice than none, and to make it a strong voice, than none at all. This is what has happened to the Australian Greens, and what may now become a reality for the Canadian Green Party.

Howard, the persona non grata, is getting out of politics, and his replacement is a former Liberal minister, Graham Richardson. Richardson does not campaign in the Liberal Party name. The Greens have no official connection to the Liberal Party. In the opinion of current Green leaders, Richardson is likely to be an anti-Green moderate, who might well use the Greens as a convenient foil to withdraw from the Liberal Party and give him a seat at its table. There are rumours that Richardson has been pressured to join the Greens, in order to prevent the Liberals from resuming power.

The harder the new government faces the more nasty, the more undemocratic the tactics of the new government become. In effect, they have replaced the Liberals with people, in the party leadership and party positions, who are hostile to the Greens and anyone else committed to the values of environmental sustainability, economic justice, and peace.

The government has placed the offices of the Ministry of the Environment in the hands of a nominee of the Liberal Party, Peter Garrett, who in the past has been sharply critical of the Greens’ policies and of the Greens. This is the same Garrett who once stood up before a meeting of the National Party, and publicly called on that party to stand aside on an issue concerning Aboriginal people. Obviously the Party could not accept his advice, but the fact that it needed to be asked said it all.

For all the official lip service, the new government is floundering in the ministerial barnacles of the old Liberal Party. Richardson is, in practice, running the government in the name of his colleague, the frugal Finance Minister, Michael Wooldridge, who is not able to remain out of politics because of his inherited deficit, and therefore his reputation as a responsible man.

The new government, by contrast, is untouchable. It is an authority without accountability. Even if a bill passes, it is only after
