The _layers_ in Photoshop are the things you work on, manipulate, and create. You can work on a single layer, or you can work on multiple layers. Layers are the foundation of all Photoshop editing. As a designer, you will be working with multiple layers, and as a content creator, you will be working with only one or two layers. Often I will introduce the concept of layers by having you place a nice graphic on top of your background image. The next step is often to try and make the top graphic transparent so that the background image becomes visible. Don’t panic: This is easy.

I usually start with the Object menu, and click Layer on the left side of the screen. Then I select the Background Image tool and click to select the image. Next, I click on the Create a new layer button on the bottom of the screen. When you place a new layer above the background layer, you get a dialog box such as the one shown in Figure 15-8.

Photoshop will remember where you place the background layer, so placing a layer above the background layer doesn’t change any layers already on the canvas. If you want to delete the background layer, then you must draw a new layer and then delete the background.

The new layer appears on top of your existing layers. It will come into effect in the order of the layers and is not affected by any previous layer settings.

If the background layer is a solid color, that layer has no transparency or control over its color. If you want to add a layer with transparency, you need to place a new layer on top. Don’t worry about a new layer’s transparency on a background layer, because Photoshop automatically sets the layer’s transparency to multiply.

If you want to manipulate the transparency of any layer, click the layer’s thumbnail in the layers panel on the left of the screen. Your image will change to view in Back or Front mode. This mode is a critical part of visual editing in Photoshop.

Front mode

Front mode is a way to quickly change the appearance of a layer without having to change the layer’s settings. To change the appearance of a layer in front mode, simply move a slider or drag the transparency up or down.

Any image editing tool has two sections: the workspace and the editing tools. These sections look similar when you first install Photoshop Elements but they transform into different tools with each tool you use.

In this example, the main tools are used by the circles and squares, but the tutorial also includes tools used by other squares and circles.

Let’s look at the three most important tools – the Lasso, Levels and Shrink wrap tools.

Lasso Tool

This Lasso tool is used for lassoing, which is drawing a line around a section of an image (or several sections of images) to select an area of an image (or images).

The lasso tool is very useful for selecting objects in images and for creating a selection mask.

Steps to create a selection with the Lasso tool:

1. Click the Lasso tool.

The lasso’s blue square is active and in the center of the tool.

2. Click to draw a line.

The line you draw is indicated by red color. (See the right edge of the selection area.)

The lasso tool uses the layer you’re on as the base of your selection. For example, if you’re on a picture layer and you’re painting on the layer mask, it’s called a mask selection.

3. Click again to close the selection.

The Fire At Bartoli At The US Open

The past two weeks, the tennis had been very exciting for all of us. But upstarts and hope to win the US Open are the French players.

Julie Girard had her best ever performance ever at the US Open. She played best tennis of her life and showed her strength up to the semifinals. After a disappointing loss in the 4th round against Sara Errani, she managed to overcome Jelena Jankovic in two sets. Then she faced her rival, Romina Oprandi in the Quarter Finals. Everyone expected that Jelena will have some more trouble after her upset in the 4th round, but it was the opposite case. Jelena’s plan to beat Girard by attacking with her passes and drop shots had worked in their favor.

Julie’s almost 10 years old career blossoms up in the US Open and she gave her best shot ever. Her game was so powerful, she raised her level, experience, and nerves. Her remarkable improvement at this match, she was more confident, she was able to hit with more ferocious power and accuracy. She managed to keep her nerve at every time she had to face a difficult ball. She showed her tremendous power and confidence by playing a perfect game, her first in the US Open.

After 20 minutes ajourn, Girard’s coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, was asked about his view of her performance. He replied, “This was the best match she ever played. I am proud of her. She has transformed her game this summer. She has improved a lot since her first Grand Slam performance at the Australian Open this year. She can have a good future ahead of her. I am so proud of her and the way she has advanced in the US Open, she is playing really good tennis at the moment.” The crowd was so happy for her.

At 21:46 ajourn, Jankovic walked to the net as Girard was serving. Jankovic’s amazing touch forced Girard to make an aggressive shot to save the match. When her weak lobber was shankbed, Girard dropped her arm and slammed it to the net. Jankovic’s toss serve pinballed on the line and the crowd went crazy at the chaotic game. The Eraser erases unwanted objects and areas of an image so you can clean it up a bit. The Quick Selection tool lets you find an area that will not affect the rest of the image. This is useful if you are cutting out a section or moving it to another file.
The Pen tool gives you a lot of different options for drawing, cutting, moving, and filling. It is one of the most useful tools in Photoshop.
The Paint Bucket tool allows you to paint an area of an image. You can also put a tint to the area you paint using the Fill Saturation and Color drop-down menus.
You can composite two images together by using the Layer and Pathfinder. The Layer dialog box allows you to combine multiple images together, as well as move, resize, or rotate a layer.
There are many font sizes and styles available in Photoshop. Some of the fonts may take up a lot of disk space depending on your usage of fonts.
There are two major categories of fonts in Photoshop: True Type and OpenType. True Type fonts are those that have their own encoding file, so they do not have to be installed. OpenType fonts work like True Type fonts; they have their own encoding file, but, unlike True Type fonts, OpenType fonts can also have embedded features to take advantage of.

Check if your machine will run Windows 8

Windows 8, recently released, is a major upgrade to Microsoft’s Windows operating system, which will be the first version of Windows to be preloaded on new computers.

It makes the upgrade possible by keeping existing Windows software separate from Windows 8, but requires a completely overhauled operating system. It also brings a new set of system-level security features and changes to how the software works.

First, let’s check if your computer will run Windows 8.
