Justification for (Copular) Disjunctive Syllogisms
First, some background. While I am happy with the general practice, I have never made an argument for why this particular form is called “disjunctive syllogism.” While I have heard of its existence, I have never seen any arguments for its construction, nor could I find any authoritative reference on the web.
Disjunctive syllogism: A disjunctive syllogism is a syllogism that is composed of
two categorical syllogisms.
Matched Cases: A matched case is an argument form that has two
instances of a categorical syllogism.
All men eat meat – All men are mortal.
All men are mortal – Socrates is a man.
All men eat meat. – Socrates is a man.
All men are mortal. – All men are mortal.
Socrates is a man – All men are mortal.
Is there a logical justification for calling this form a disjunctive syllogism? If so, how is it called?
Why is it called this?
I’ve never heard of the term “disjunctive syllogism” before, but I have heard of its existence.
Like you, I was under the impression that it was the standard terminology that a disjunctive syllogism is the standard form of syllogism, but this doesn’t appear to be the case. All eagles are birds
All eagles are immortal
If we then want to know whether some eagle (that is, some individual) is immortal or not, we could use one of the following two syllogisms:
All eagles are immortal.
All eagles are birds.
(eagle is mortal) and (eagle is immortal).
(eagle is immortal).
So, we have at least two premises, but they are dis https://www.invertebase.org/portal/checklists/checklist.php?clid=7261
