Open Architecture Initiative
The Open Architecture Initiative (OAI) is a non-profit organization committed to advancing the use of open standards in the construction industry through technological and educational excellence, and exemplary business practice. It has created the OAI Common Data Form (CDF) for the exchange of drawing data (DWG) and building information modeling (BIM) between CAD software.
OAI has developed a standard specification for interchange between computer-aided design systems (CAD). This specification was published by the Open Architecture Initiative in 2004 and revised and approved in 2006. This specification provides a data interchange format between Autodesk® AutoCAD and all OAI-approved applications. The specification provides architectural model definitions for Autodesk® AutoCAD, Bentley Microstation, Delmia, Inventor, and Revit® CAD and the interoperability specifications that describe the implementation details for the corresponding applications. The specification is currently being used for exchanging data between the CAD applications listed above.
OAI is also the primary developer of the open source OASIS file format for file interoperability, as well as the OASIS WbX, OBJ and Shp extensions. OASIS is implemented in Autodesk® AutoCAD and in a number of other CAD products from other vendors.
